Pelican's "Naughty" Collaboration with Calabogie Brewing Will Keep Visitors Guessing

Pelican Seafood Market & Grill is a long-time supporter of local distilleries and breweries, but one local beer has out-sold all the rest. The reason is clear - it pairs swimmingly with seafood!

Pelican and Calabogie Brewing Co. have collaborated on a private label run of this popular pint. They will release it in cans for a limited time as Naughty Octopus. Pelican's dining room has been serving Naughty Octopus on tap as a trial, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

"It's an instant grin when people see the name and then a delightfully surprised smile when they take their first sip," says Jim Foster, one of the owners of the family-run Pelican. "We pride ourselves on delivering high-quality products and exceptional customer experiences and doing it all with warmth, laughter and smiles. Working with another fantastic local business like Calabogie Brewing on a fun project like this is exactly the type of thing we love to do."

Pelican and Calabogie are tight-lipped on which brew exactly is being private labelled, but Paddy Whelan, Managing Partner of Calabogie Brewing, thinks Ottawa beer lovers can probably figure it out.

"If you're a local craft beer fan and you've tried the Calabogie line, we're confident you'll be able to pick it out – what you might not have tried is this brew paired with lobster poutine or fresh haddock fish and chips. That brings it to an entirely different level. We challenge our fans to try it out and guess which brew it is."

While the name is clever, cheeky, and in keeping with the fun, sea-centric theme of the Pelican brand, the partners clam up when asked what Naughty Octopus will look like. The label design for this tasty creation is under wraps for now.

The private label design reveal is an event craft beer lovers won't want to miss – and it will mark the kick-off to the upcoming Pelican Seafood Shell Fest running from September 13th to October 14th.

Until then, curious beer fans can savour Naughty Octopus on tap and see if they can figure out which Calabogie brew it is while appreciating how it pairs with whichever seafood they enjoy that day! (Happy hour at the Pelican Grill runs daily from 2- 4:30 PM and might be perfect for this taste testing!)
